Library of Gestures

Library of gestures by Norwegian choreographer Janne Camilla Lyster consists of a movement choir with no less than 20 dancers, one flutist and one percussionist. The performance is built up of three layers: a mathematically structured movement layer of gestures, composed live music and performed text.

The project stems from the choreographer’s fascination with how movement can be preserved and evoked across time and space. The performance uses one minute of reconstructed movement material from the 19th century in the form of gestures – where the original meaning is abandoned in favor of the impact these gestures have on us, here and now. In the performance, the gestures travel through different poetic, musical and compositional contexts and processes.
